1789 June 25th

France is currently bankrupt and King Louis called for the Estates General meeting. The estates General meeting is an assembly of representatives from all three estates, this time King Louis wants to approve a new tax. As a lawyer, it is mandatory to attend the meeting. I have to be involved of the decision and participate to the bill. I heard many lawyers are participating, and I am quite excited to see some of my colleagues. As always, I excepted for the clergy and the nobles to dominate the Estates-General as always throughout the Middle ages. As the rules, each estate’s delegates met in a separate hall to vote and each had one vote. However, the two privileged estates could always outvote the Third Estate. Mostly, all the lawyers are in the second estate.
I entered the hall and looked around, I saw a familiar face, he wore a luxurious clothes and had a brown hair but he looked older. His name was Luis Alexander. He was my co-worker for the last case. We did a fine job and won the trial, earned quite a bit of money and had a celebrating drink at the bar. We greeted each other and I sat next to him. We talked about the new tax and didn’t expect much about the decision. We had one commonality between us, that we disliked King Louis. Although we were rich, we did not like the fact that he bankrupted the country. The meeting began and something unexpected happened. The third estate, seemed to be influenced by the Enlightenment insisted that all three estates should meet together and that each delegate have a vote, giving an advantage to the third estate, which had as many delegates as the other two estates combined. A man called Emmanuel Joseph Sieyes lead the third estate. His speech was dramatic and influential, suggesting that the Third Estate delegates name themselves the “National Assembly”. I realized a guy one of my friend called Hugo Lloris. He asked me for some information about the meeting, so during the break I told him a brief information about the situation. Although he was an architect he seemed to have a good understanding after I explained. He participated on the speech and it was very influential. It was an unexpected speech from an architect.
On June 17th, 1789, they voted to establish the National Assembly, in effect proclaiming the end of absolute monarchy and the beginning of representative government. However, three days later the Third estate delegates found themselves out of the meeting room. I could hear the outraged voice of the delegates shouting to open the door. Suddenly I seemed like they decided to give up. After few hours a soldier reported that the Third Estate delegates had broke down a door to an indoor tennis court and made a pledge called the Tennis Court Oath. Soon after, nobles and members of the clergy who favored reform joined the Third Estate delegates. However, In response Louis was outraged and stationed his mercenary army of Swiss guards around Versailles. It was quite an awkward situation which I decided to return to my office and wait until I clarify this situation.

Journal #2

1793 December

I was told by my secretary that noblemen made speeches declaring their liberty and equality, motivating them to join the Nation Assembly, sweeping the feudal privileges of the First and Second Estates, making commoners equal to the nobles and the clergy. It was the end of the Old Regime.
Three weeks later, the National Assembly stated the Declaration of Independence that “men are born and remain free and equal in rights.” In addition, the National Assembly’s early reforms focused on the Church. They took over the Church’s land and declared that the Church officials and priests were to be elected. Their actions were largely impacted to the French economy, paying off France’s huge dept.
Meanwhile, in June 1791, King Louis and his family tried to escape from France to Austrian Netherlands. However, they were apprehended and returned to Paris. For two years the National Assembly argued over a new France constitution. Finally, in September 1791, the Nation Assembly completed the new constitution and Louis approved it. They also created a new legislative body called the Legislative Assembly. This body had the power to create laws and approve or reject declarations of war. Myself as a lawyer I was included in the Legislative Assembly.
However, the smooth transition was interrupted by the other European countries such as Austria and Prussia, they feared that similar revolt might break out in their own countries,so they urged the French government to restore Louis back his position. Everyone in the Legislative Assembly were outraged including me. This request was unacceptable, April 1792 the Legislative Assembly declared war against Austria and Prussia. The war was deadly, men and women participated to the war to save their contribution the French Revolution.Under pressure from radicals, the Legislative Assembly set aside the Constitution of 1791. It declared the king was out of authority and called for the election of a new legislature called the “National Convention” which took office on September 21. It abolished the monarchy and declared France a republic. When the convention took office, the war with Austria and Prussia. French won many battles but when Great Britain, Holland and Spain joined Prussia and Austria, French lost control of the war.
Meanwhile, I entered a club called the Jacobins, a famous lawyer named “George Danton” inspired me with his fascinating speech. The National Convention had reduced Louis XVI’s power. After that we Jacobins, tried Louis for treason. As a result, we successfully found Louis guilty and on January 21, 1793 Louis stepped in front of the guillotine. It was quite a sight when Louis was shaking his body and when his head was beheaded some people screamed. When Louis was dead, all the Jacobins left and some of the started to swear at us. I guess, they had real faith to Louis. I realized a unique looking man, and I once heard of his name “**Leone** **Louis**” the owner of Cotton mill. He kept on staring at me as if he was going to harass me. I quickly left the scene and went back to my office.
At the same time, the National Convention also had to contend with the continuing war with Austria and Prussia. As mentioned above when Great Britain, Holland and Spain, to reinforce the French army, Jacobin leaders which excluded me because I am a lawyer and a fresher to the group, the Convention took an extreme step.

1802 August

My god, I almost forgot about the new general that everyone has been talking about Napoleon Bonaparte. He was was assigned to defend the delegates from the armed royalists in October 1795. After the rebellion In October 31st 1795, I got a call from one of my client’s wife to come over to her house and eat dinner with them. My client’s wife was a wealthy noble named Chloé Vigée. She did not have a specific occupation but she was very rich. She wore luxurious dress and my client was also very rich. I was invited to eat dinner with them and my client and I were discussion how Napoleon crushed the royalists. It was quite unexpected but he became the hero of France. I had a neutral opinion to Napoleon’s action but, Chloé Vigée seemed to dislike Napoleon.
In 1796, he was appointed to lead a French army against Austria. He expanded more and gained popularity from the citizens. Things changed, by 1799 the Directory lost control and Napoleon took control of the national legislature and drove out most of its member. I was one of the members that was excluded and for me I guess it was good because I could live a normal life being a lawyer as usual. However, those who remained voted to dissolve the Directory. It was replaced by three consuls, one was Napoleon. This was called the coup d etat.
However, the war did not end with the european alliance(Britain, Austria and Russia).Eventually, in 1799 Napoleon lead his army and the result was peace treaty between France and the alliance, in 1802 France restored its peace once again. It was peaceful and I had some free time to meet my friends. Some of my friends became very wealthy and one of my friend Raphael Lacroix who was already wealthy and who is still wealthy is a second estate noble, owning a lot of lands. I once bought some of his lands if I messed up my job but I guess I really didn’t need it but I had time to see him and discuss what I should do with the land because the revolution was over. We each had fantastic ideas and we had no worries about crazy leaders or financial issues. It was going as I wished, peaceful and no worries. It would be something that I wish it will continue as long as Napoleon is in control.
